A fact well known to the ancient mystical orders, but less commonly realized among the general public today, is that the eyes not only receive light rays and relay them to the brain, but also transmit energy beams. You can conduct a simple experiment to demonstrate this, by staring at a person some distance from you who is not looking in your direction, even when you are not facing one another. More than fifty percent of the time they will turn to look directly back at you. The more fixed your gaze, the greater the success. Planet Earth is basically a big electro-magnet, and the very substance of the material world we live in is itself a conductive medium. The human is the only mammal whose eye has the sclera, or white of the eye, which is probably an indicator that we are the only mammal capable of transmitting as well as receiving light energy.
Back in the 1930s, Dr. Paul Brunton coined the term ‘Ocular Radiation’ for this phenomenon[1] but, unfortunately, should you do an on-line search for this phrase today, it will most likely yield information about medical radiation treatment. A more apt title would be ‘Ocular Transmission.’ One way you can hone your skills in this practice is by focused contemplation. I first experienced the awareness of eye-gazing at a focused meditation conducted by the Brahma Kumaris at Ubud, Bali, in 2002. A group of about twenty people sat in a darkened room and focused on a pin-point of light on a neutral coloured wall in hour-long sessions. The Hindu Yogis called this gazing meditation ‘Trataka.’ The effect is to awaken the knowledge that the beams of energy travel in two directions, both in and out of the eyes. That the eyes are ‘the gateway’ or ‘window to the soul’ (Psyche) is an expression variously attributed to Shakespeare, The Gospel of Matthew, Herman Melville and Edgar Allen Poe.
Recognizing that the human eye is not only a passive receiver, but also an active transmitter of radiation, is of great assistance in utilising our creative energy, by sharpening the focus of our willpower. It is said that this radiation consists of electricity and magnetism, the latter, of course, being the instrument of attraction. There is much information out there these days on the popular topic of ‘The Law of Attraction (LOA),’ and Ocular Transmission enables one to cultivate and achieve fixed attention, while the pineal receptor works in drawing the object of desire to oneself. It is advisable to first activate the line from the Intelligible or Solar Heart to the eyes before establishing your needs and wants, firstly because the Psyche, seated in the solar centre, is the best judge for what is right for us and, secondly, our aims have more chance of success if we believe in them ‘with all our heart.’ The reason why so many LOA practitioners fail in their attempts is they accept the validity of what their brain-based ego-self thinks it wants, when all the while there is a conflict going on at the subconscious level between the head and the heart. Passionate beliefs of the heart will usually trump the capricious fancies of the brain.
With the two-way function of our ocular transceivers in mind, what result could be expected if the age-old art of ‘Sun-gazing’ was applied to transmitting our intentionally focused energy to the Sun, instead of just passively receiving its light and Pneuma?
The ritual of Sun-gazing has had a recent surge in popularity. It was practised by the Ancient Egyptians and Aztecs. Medical practitioners still warn of its potential dangers and I stress that my purpose is not to encourage untrained persons to engage in it, but rather to recommend that those interested should first investigate it thoroughly and talk to existing practitioners, before embarking on any experiments of their own. Those who claim success with it started at a minute or so per day and built up their exposure over years. Sunrise and Sunset are the preferred times to gaze at the Sun. An informative source is the movie, ‘Eat the Sun’, available on line[2], or start with the trailer on You-Tube[3].
Among the yogis of India throughout the centuries there have been those adept in deriving all their physical energy requirements from the Sun, while refraining from eating food. In his best-selling book Autobiography of a Yogi, Paramahansa Yogananda wrote of one such lady called Giri Bala and says to her, “Your nourishment is derived from the finer energies of the air and sunlight, and from the cosmic power that recharges your body through the medulla oblongata.”[4] [Those ‘finer energies’ are the same that I refer to as Pneuma]. He predicts that, “Someday scientists will discover how man can live directly on solar energy,” comparing it to the way chlorophyll collects and stores the Sun’s energy in plants.
Paramahansa Yogananda cites a speech made by Dr Geo. W Crile in the USA back in 1933 as follows: “This all important radiation, which releases electrical currents for the body’s electrical circuit, the nervous system, is given food by the Sun’s rays. Atoms, Dr Crile says, are solar systems. Atoms are the vehicles that are filled with solar radiance as so many coiled springs. These countless atomfuls of energy are taken in as food. Once in the human body, these tense vehicles, the atoms, are discharged in the body’s protoplasm, the radiance furnishing new chemical energy, new electrical currents. ‘Your body is made up of such atoms,’ Dr Crile said. ‘They are your muscles, brains, and sensory organs, such as the eyes and ears’.”[5]
This concurs with the Chinese teachings of the Tao. Here I quote from ‘The Secret Teachings of the Tao Te Ching’ by Mantak Chia and Tao Huang:
“Taoist practice focuses on restoring this direct connection with the cosmic source (light particles) so that we regain the ability directly live from light energy. As we develop this capacity, we become less and less dependent on eating plants and animals. Taoist legends tell us that throughout the ages, some Taoist masters have been able to live for months or even years without taking any food and without losing weight, while maintaining and even enhancing their vitality. Today, there are reports that a number of people from different backgrounds throughout the world are living only on water, tea, or fruit juice. This practice may be possible because such advanced practitioners tap into cosmic light, the original source of human life and all other forms of being.” Once again I hasten to add the caution that nobody should attempt obtaining their principle supply of energy from the Sun without the training and supervision of qualified teachers!
Being aware that we can transmit as well as receive light, Sun-gazers might well reap extra benefit by using their ritual as a time of prayer, expressing intentions, desires and, most beneficially, gratitude. Quantum science describes ‘The Role of the Observer’ in these terms: "Whatever is being watched is affected by whoever is watching it". Those who do not Sun-gaze can nevertheless benefit from facing the morning or evening Sun with eyes closed and focusing their attention on the pineal gland as their transceiver, while intoning their chosen mantra. According to Canadian blogger Molly A. Chapman, “When you look directly at the sun’s rays, send intent, visualizations, thoughts, feelings, and sensations of divine virtues and situations to bless all, and send any request, through the optic nerve into the rays of the sun. […]Looking at the sun at sunrise or sunset is safe on the eye, and over time, the eye is capable of looking for longer periods of time at brighter light… Remember to send blessings and prayers as well as receive when you gaze at the light.”[6]
Additionally, it is believed that bright light stimulates the production of serotonin and melatonin in the pineal, and it has been suggested that the pineal gland is involved in the production of Dimethyltryptamine (DMT), and other peptides that have psychoactive effects. The pineal sits above the mouth, suspended in the third ventricle, a chamber filled with cerebrospinal fluid which, it is said, can be released by combining Sun-gazing rituals with mantras. These secretions have been called by various names: nectar of the gods, ambrosia, the living water, and amrita. During Sun-gazing or deep meditation, this amrita is produced, fills the chamber then drips down the back of the throat. Amrita has an intensely sweet taste described as nectar, honey, gold dust, euphoric, ecstatic or intoxicating. A teaching from Sri Chinmoy states, “There are quite a few mantras that also help in opening the third eye. The Gayatri Mantra, for example, helps in opening the third eye, for it invokes the infinite knowledge, wisdom and light.” Sun yogis usually recite the Gayatri mantra while sun-gazing. The last line of this mantra can be translated as “May it [the Sun] activate the brain.” People report that amitra usually is secreted while practicing the Khechari mudra (tongue upward on palate).[7]
One does not need to stare directly at the bright orb to be inspired by its poetic splendour as it rises and sets on colourful horizons. ‘Green Flashes’ and ‘Green Rays’ are particularly pleasant optical phenomena that sometimes occur right after Sunset. When the conditions are right, a green spot is visible above the upper rim of the disc of the Sun. The green appearance usually lasts for no more than a second or two. Occasionally, the Green Flash can resemble a ray shooting upward from the point of Sunset. Green Flashes occur because our atmosphere refracts the light from the Sun.
These phenomena may be observed from any altitude and at any latitude; although at the equator the flash rarely lasts longer than a second. They are best seen at an unobstructed horizon, such as over the ocean, and are more likely to be seen in a still, clear sky when more of the light from the setting Sun reaches the observer without being scattered - in other words, what might be called an ‘uneventful’ Sunset. It might be expected that a blue flash would be more likely, since that is refracted more than the other colours, and the blue component of the Sun's light is the very last to disappear below the horizon - but it gets scattered and absorbed by dust particles and gas molecules in the atmosphere, which are more prevalent in the evening. So the remaining light ends up being what is left at the other end of the spectrum – yellow, orange and red. With slight magnification, a green rim on the top of the solar disc may be seen on most clear-day Sunsets, although the flash or ray effects require a stronger layering of the atmosphere and a mirage, which serves to magnify the green from a fraction of a second to a couple of seconds. A Green Flash may also be observed in association with the Moon and bright planets at the horizon, including Venus and Jupiter.
We humans have a stronger affiliation with Father Sun than we are aware of today and I encourage you to form a new type of relationship with it.
