THE EYE OF THE SUN RUNNER
Copyright © Paul Vernon Young 2015 The Energy Stream Connecting the Eye to the Sun Planet Earth’s habitat is the sun’s bubble, known as the heliosphere, and it is reasonable to suppose that all the matter in our solar system, from planets and asteroids to earthly life-forms, owes its origin to our very own star[i]. In a material sense then, the sun is our god, our source and provider. Ancient Egyptians and Greeks believed the sun we see is just the physical form of a higher ‘Intelligible or Spiritual Sun.’ Philo of Alexandria called it: “The Sun of the sun, the Intelligible object behind the object comprehensible by sense, and from invisible fountains he supplies the visible beams which our eyes behold.”[ii] In addition to the light, heat and solar winds the sun sends our way, the Greeks taught that our Psyche receives a more subtle, invisible life-force called Pneuma, which, along with rays of the light spectrum, enters the human being via the eyes. Why is it important to be aware of this force? Simply put, tapping directly into the generator increases your energy supply and intensifies the light. Once linked by a powerful, unobstructed path of current, the circuit becomes complete. The output of the sun is the vivifying stream of life itself. And for the spiritually inclined seeker, illumination advances exponentially as you increase your exposure to the source and the intake of its light rays. Why is the eye the principle organ of absorption and how does the intake of light parallel the reception of Pneuma? In Plato’s ‘Republic’ he asserts, “Of all sense-organs the eye is most sun-like.”[iii] Moreover he tabulates the ‘Simile of the Sun,’ demonstrating that in the Visible World the sun is the source of growth and light, granting us the faculty of sight and visibility to objects of sense, while in the Intelligible World the Sun-behind-the-sun is the source of reality and truth, granting us the faculty of knowledge and intelligibility to objects of the mind and thought. A number of points attract further enquiry into the optic-solar connection:
How We Receive the Sun’s Energy We know that millions of little photoreceptors in our eye’s retina convert light into signals that stimulate biological processes in the body’s cells. Most of these receptors take the form of cones or rods, but there is a third type, discovered in the 1990’s, called intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs), which support our circadian rhythms via the pineal gland[iv]. The pineal is the gland in the center of the brain, often spoken of as the ‘third eye’. While it appears to be dormant in most of us, it is the primary receptor of the Pneuma that nourishes our Psyche and its related psychic senses. Blind people are able to receive the sun’s radiation from these ipRGCs via the pineal gland[v]. As noted by the 13th Century poet Rumi, “Close both eyes, To see with the other eye.”[vi] Once the Pneuma has entered our being, how does it go about infusing us with its life-supporting properties? Just as blood is circulated throughout the body by the heart, the Pneuma is spread by the specific psychic energy center associated with the heart. This energy center interacts with the physical body through two major pathways: the endocrine system and the nervous system – in particular, networks of nerves called ‘plexuses’. From the eyes, then the pineal gland, the force travels to the center of the intelligible heart. Notice how we humans, whenever referring to ourselves in the first person, tend to point our fingers to our heart. While much of the human body is structured symmetrically, the physical heart is oddly off-center to the left. The thoracic (chest) cavity, one of the two main hollow spaces in the human body, houses the heart to the left, with a very tiny corresponding space on the right, which is home to our higher ‘heart.’ That’s the peaceful little place inside we talk about when we say “we mean it from the heart,” or we refer to our “heart of hearts.” We’re not talking about the muscular organ that acts as our bodily pump. We are usually referring to the innermost part of our Psyche. The author Dr Paul Brunton liked to refer to this miniscule particle in the chest cavity as the ‘Overself-atom’ and in his book ‘The Quest of the Overself,’[vii] he quotes from the ancient Oriental treatise, ‘Chandogya Upanishad’: “This is my soul in the inmost heart, smaller than a grain of rice, or of barley, or of mustard-seed, or of a grain of millet’s kernel; this is my soul in the inmost heart, greater than the earth, greater than the atmosphere, greater than the heaven, greater than these worlds.” So while mystics see the physical particle as miniscule, they envisage its Psychic counterpart as being like the sun, with some referring to it as the Solar Heart. It cannot be inside the physical heart itself, because that would mean that heart transplant patients lost their inner Psyche and gained some else’s. It’s to the right. The Solar Heart Having been carried to the heart center by the ‘parallel’ psychic nervous system, the vivifying Pneuma is said to be dispersed to our entire being, including every cell of the body. In the early 17th century the Hermetic philosopher Robert Fludd offered the illustration below, teaching that the intelligible heart was in fact a ‘little sun’ within the human being, connected to, and animated by, the great sun we see in the sky. Like many Hermetic/Kabbalistic teachers, he portrays the human body in three parts, recognizing our triune nature – the Trinity exists below, as above. The author Arthur Fideler, when using this illustration in his works, makes the following observation: “Fludd always identified the solar disc with the human heart, the center of the soul, and hence the arbitrator between the fires of intellect and the waters of biological instinct. In so doing, Fludd was following the precedents set by the natural symbolism of alchemy and Kabbalistic philosophy, and other forms of traditional cosmology, where the heart, as the seat of life, is regarded as the microcosmic reflection of the life-giving sun.[viii]” Just like the ancient Greeks, Fludd noted the connection between the intelligible and visible existence. Mystical traditions have for millennia offered practices to open and activate this Intelligible, Solar Heart, using the tools of meditation, visualization, intonation and breathing techniques. For aspirants wishing to learn such a meditation method without joining an organization, the book/CD set ‘Living in the Heart’ by Drunvalo Melchizedek may be a helpful starting point[ix]. For those who practice chakra visualization, the strategy is to connect the third eye to the intelligible heart. The ego personality perceives that consciousness arises from the brain, but that is a relative truth. The brain as the seat of reflected consciousness can be compared to the moon, getting its true conscious light from the Solar Heart. Ocular Transmission A fact well known to the ancient mystical orders, but less commonly realized among the general public today, is that the eyes not only receive light rays and relay them to the brain, but also transmit energy beams. You can conduct a simple experiment to demonstrate this, by staring at a person some distance from you who is not looking in your direction, especially at the back of their neck if you are situated at the right angle. More than fifty percent of the time they will turn to look directly back at you. The more fixed your gaze, the greater the success. Planet Earth is basically a big electro-magnet and the very substance of the material world we live in is itself a conductive medium. The human is the only mammal whose eye has the sclera, or white of the eye, which is probably an indicator that we are the only mammal capable of transmitting as well as receiving light energy. Back in the 1930s, Dr. Paul Brunton coined the term ‘Ocular Radiation’ for this phenomenon[x] but, unfortunately, should you do an on-line search for this phrase today, it will most likely yield information about medical radiation treatment. A more apt title would be ‘Ocular Transmission.’ One way you can hone your skills in this practice is by focused contemplation. This author first experienced the awareness of eye-gazing at a focused meditation conducted by the Brahma Kumaris at Ubud, Bali, in 2002. A group of about twenty people sat in a darkened room and focused on a pin-point of light on a neutral colored wall in hour-long sessions. The Hindu Yogis called this gazing meditation ‘Trataka.’ The effect is to awaken the knowledge that the beams of energy travel in two directions, both in and out of the eyes. That the eyes are ‘the gateway’ or ‘window to the soul’ (Psyche) is an expression variously attributed to Shakespeare, The Gospel of Matthew, Herman Melville and Edgar Allen Poe. Recognizing that the human eye is not only a passive receiver, but also an active transmitter of radiation, is of great assistance in utilising our creative energy, by sharpening the focus of our willpower. It is said that this radiation consists of electricity and magnetism, the latter, of course, being the instrument of attraction. There is much information out there these days on the popular topic of ‘The Law of Attraction (LOA),’ and Ocular Transmission enables one to cultivate and achieve fixed attention, while the pineal receptor works in drawing the object of desire to oneself. It is advisable to first activate the line from the intelligible heart to the eyes before establishing your needs and wants, firstly because the Psyche, seated in the solar center, is the best judge for what is right for us and, secondly, our aims have more chance of success if we believe in them ‘with all our heart.’ The reason why so many LOA practitioners fail in their attempts is they accept the validity of what their brain-based ego-self thinks it wants, when all the while there is a conflict going on at the subconscious level between the head and the heart. Passionate beliefs of the heart will usually trump the capricious fancies of the brain. With the two-way function of our ocular transceivers in mind, what result could be expected if the increasingly popular art of ‘sun-gazing’ was applied to transmitting our intentionally focused energy to the sun, instead of just passively receiving its light and Pneuma? Gazing and Grazing on the Sun The ritual of sun-gazing has had a recent surge in popularity. It was practised by the Ancient Egyptians and Aztecs. Medical practitioners still warns of its potential dangers and the purpose of this article is not to encourage untrained persons to engage in it, but rather to recommend that those interested should first investigate it thoroughly and talk to existing practitioners, before embarking on any experiments of their own. Those who claim success with it started at a minute or so per day and built up their exposure over years. Sunrise and sunset are the preferred times to gaze at the sun. An informative source is the movie, ‘Eat the Sun’, available on line[xi], or start with the trailer on You-Tube[xii] Being aware that we can transmit as well as receive light, sun-gazers might well reap extra benefit by using their ritual as a time of prayer, expressing intentions, desires and, most beneficially, gratitude. Quantum science describes ‘The Role of the Observer’ in these terms: "Whatever is being watched, is affected by whoever is watching it". Those who do not sun-gaze can nevertheless benefit from facing the morning or evening sun with eyes closed and focusing their attention on the pineal gland as their transceiver, while intoning their chosen mantra. According to Canadian blogger Molly A. Chapman, “When you look directly at the sun’s rays, send intent, visualizations, thoughts, feelings, and sensations of divine virtues and situations to bless all, and send any request, through the optic nerve into the rays of the sun. […]Looking at the sun at sunrise or sunset is safe on the eye, and over time, the eye is capable of looking for longer periods of time at brighter light… Remember to send blessings and prayers as well as receive when you gaze at the light.”[xiii] Additionally, it is believed that bright light stimulates the production of serotonin and melatonin in the pineal, and it has been suggested that the pineal gland is involved in the production of Dimethyltryptamine (DMT), and other peptides that have psychoactive effects. The pineal sits above the mouth, suspended in the third ventricle, a chamber filled with cerebrospinal fluid which, it is said, can be released by combining sun-gazing rituals with mantras. These secretions have been called by various names: nectar of the gods, ambrosia, the living water, and amrita. During sun-gazing or deep meditation, this amrita is produced, fills the chamber then drips down the back of the throat. Amrita is said to have an intensely sweet taste described as nectar, honey, gold dust, euphoric, ecstatic, intoxicating. A teaching from Sri Chinmoy states, “There are quite a few mantras that also help in opening the third eye. The Gayatri Mantra, for example, helps in opening the third eye, for it invokes the infinite knowledge, wisdom and light.” Sun yogis usually recite the Gayatri mantra while sun-gazing. The last line of this mantra can be translated as “May it [the sun] activate the brain.” People report that amitra usually is secreted while practicing the Khechari mudra (tongue upward on palate).[xiv] May the Solar Force be with You. Could it be that we humans have a stronger affiliation with the sun than we are aware of today? If we recognize that our world was produced by the sun in a physical sense and that it continues to nourish us with life-giving energy, is it possible that there are conscious living beings dwelling on our star, whose ‘bodies’ are composed of photons rather than atoms? Here on earth, scientists are working on making a new form of matter based on photons. The group leader, Harvard Professor Mikhail Lukin says, "Most of the properties of light we know about originate from the fact that photons are massless, and that they do not interact with each other. What we have done is create a special type of medium in which photons interact with each other so strongly that they begin to act as though they have mass, and they bind together to form molecules. This type of photonic bound state has been discussed theoretically for quite a while, but until now it hadn't been observed”[xv]. We already knew that light photons can behave like either a wave or a particle, depending on the circumstances. Now we learn that photon particles can behave like atoms and interact with each other so strongly they begin to act as though they have mass, then bind together to form molecules. These molecules can, again under the right conditions, mingle with physical matter. Both photons and Pneuma are generated from the sun. From this knowledge arises the possibility of the two combining to create life forms that could, at will, behave as if they had physical mass and thereby intermingle with human beings. In every major culture around the world we find legends of ancient solar entities that travelled to planet earth and interacted with humanity. These beings came to be deified:
Although they, along with various other-worldly beings described in religious scriptures, were described as having the radiant appearance of the sun, they would not have been composed of fiery flames, just as the sun itself is not a ball of flame. But they could well have had ‘light-bodies’ consisting of photons, enabling them to dwell on the sun or, at times, travel to earth via various ‘gateways of the sun,’ such as the well-known one at Tiwanaku. Are we living in a time when we are rediscovering our bond with the sun? Mother earth provides food for the body; Father Sun provides nourishment for the Psyche. Our solar origins and connections are very real. ”The sun is love. The lover, a speck circling the sun.” Rumi, the 13th Century Persian poet. FOOTNOTES: [i] That includes water.
